March is Disability Awareness and Women’s History Month

March 17, 2025

Dear Lafayette School District Families,

As we continue our commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment, I am pleased to recognize both Women’s History Month and Disability Awareness Month this March. Over the past year, our District has introduced LAFSD Celebrates, a set of age-appropriate lessons to honor major cultural and religious heritage months. These lessons, which are available on our website to share at home, are thoughtfully designed by teachers to help students learn, explore their own family histories, and build connections with one another. We want every student to see themselves reflected in our curriculum while also gaining a deeper appreciation for the diverse experiences of others.

During Women’s History Month, we celebrate the achievements, resilience, and leadership of women throughout history. From scientists and artists to activists and educators, women have played an essential role in shaping our world. As Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor says, “A role model in the flesh provides more than inspiration; her very existence is confirmation of possibilities one may have every reason to doubt, saying, ‘Yes, someone like me can do this.’” This month, we encourage students to reflect on the contributions of women in their own lives and communities, recognizing the vital role they continue to play in shaping the future.

Disability Awareness Month reminds us of the importance of inclusion, accessibility, and celebrating the strengths of all individuals. We honor the voices and achievements of people with disabilities, working to create a society where everyone is valued and supported. Disability rights advocate Judy Heumann once stated, “Disability only becomes a tragedy when society fails to provide the things we need to lead our lives.” Our District remains committed to fostering an environment where every student, regardless of ability, can thrive. This month, we also encourage students to learn about the contributions of individuals with disabilities and to reflect on the ways we can all work toward a more inclusive world.

We are grateful for your partnership in supporting our students' learning and growth. Thank you for being part of our community as we continue to celebrate the rich diversity of our District.

Sincerely,
Brent Stephens, Ed.D.
Superintendent, Lafayette School District
