Celebrating Arab and Muslim American Heritage Month

Dear Lafayette School District Families,

This spring, the Lafayette School District is proud to honor Arab and Muslim American Heritage Month as part of our ongoing commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive community for all. Over the past year, through our LAFSD Celebrates initiative, we’ve shared age-appropriate, engaging lessons with students and families to recognize major cultural and religious heritage months. These lessons are designed to be informative and accessible to all learners—regardless of their background—while encouraging students to explore their own identities and deepen their understanding of others.

Arab and Muslim American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Arab Americans to our communities and our country. From science and literature to public service and the arts, Arab Americans have shaped and enriched American life in countless ways. It is an opportunity to recognize the global and historical impact of Muslim scholars, artists, leaders, and everyday individuals whose faith and culture have shaped societies for centuries. It also offers a time to uplift the experiences of Muslim Americans and promote a deeper understanding of Islamic traditions.

At the heart of these lessons is the goal of building connection through knowledge. Stanford’s Dr. Rania Awaad, who works on mental health support for Muslim people, encourages all of us to practice “adopting the mindset that diversity and change are both crucial and positive.” Through the LAFSD Celebrates lessons and activities, we hope all students feel seen, valued, and inspired to learn more about themselves and one another.

Thank you for being partners in this important work. We are proud to be a community that celebrates diversity, fosters inclusion, and nurtures every student’s sense of connection and belonging.

Sincerely,
Brent Stephens
